Animals and history are woven into her stories as well as the flavor of the South. After reading her first history book, in elementary school, she was hooked and consumed everything she could about it. Her addiction to the past was further kindled by a childhood filled with weekend traipsing through rural graveyards for family links. That activity probably contributed to her fascination with the supernatural which is also at the core of her writing.
Charleston, South Carolina, Mary Elizabeth’s home, serves as backdrop and even character in most of her stories. As a trained historian fascinated by all that is ghostly, the city is a bottomless source of fodder for her books. This Southerner from a long line of the same sits on her metaphorical porch and offers you tales that she hopes will cause you to climb the steps and sit with her for a spell.
